How to do the Band Chest Press

Cues reviewed by Kwabena Osei on

Setup

Band anchored behind you at chest height, one handle in each hand, staggered or split stance for stability.

  1. Press both handles forward until your arms are extended in front of your chest.

  2. Return under control, keeping tension on the band at all times -- don't let it go slack behind you.

  3. Keep your core braced so the band doesn't pull your torso backward mid-rep.

Common mistakes

  • Letting the band go slack at the back of the movement, which removes tension at exactly the point a free weight would still be loaded.

  • An unstable stance that lets the band's pull rotate or pull the lifter off balance.
