How to do the Band Squat

Cues reviewed by Kwabena Osei on

Setup

Band anchored underfoot or to a low point behind you, looped around the upper back/shoulders like a bar.

  1. Descend as in a bodyweight squat -- resistance will be lightest at the bottom and increase as you stand, the opposite loading curve of a free-weight squat.

  2. Keep tension on the band throughout; don't let it go slack at the bottom.

  3. Drive up through the sticking point near lockout, where band tension peaks.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting the same "hardest at the bottom" feel as a barbell squat -- the band's loading curve is real and different, not a sign of doing it wrong.

  • An anchor point that lets the band slip or shift position mid-set, changing the resistance angle without the lifter realizing it.
