Swimming is performed in water, which supports body weight and removes impact entirely, making it one of the most joint-friendly aerobic options — valuable for people with joint pain, high body mass, or injuries that preclude weight-bearing (see joint-friendly-options). It recruits a large amount of muscle across the upper and lower body and trunk, so it is a true full-body conditioner.

Intensity. Slow/easy swimming ≈ 4.5–6 METs; moderate-to-vigorous lap swimming ≈ 8–10 METs (see mets). Energy cost is strongly affected by stroke and skill: an inefficient swimmer expends far more energy at a given speed than an efficient one.

Key caveats vs. land cardio.

  • Technique-dependent: efficiency dominates performance and energy cost; a poor stroke fatigues quickly regardless of fitness.
