Aerobic exercise produces energy with oxygen and powers continuous endurance work; anaerobic exercise produces energy without oxygen and powers short, high-intensity bursts — cardiorespiratory conditioning targets the aerobic side.
Bioenergetics concerns the source of energy for muscle activity. For conditioning purposes the key distinction is by oxygen requirement:
Aerobic — energy production with oxygen. Served by the Aerobic (Oxygen) System. It burns carbohydrate and fat (and a little protein in long events), supplies a virtually unlimited amount of ATP over a long period, and is the predominant source for long-duration, low-intensity activity. This is the system cardiorespiratory conditioning is designed to develop.
Anaerobic — energy production without oxygen. Served by the ATP-PC (Phosphagen) System and the Glycolytic (Lactic Acid) System. These supply energy rapidly for short, high-power efforts but have limited capacity and (for the glycolytic system) produce fatiguing lactic acid.
In conditioning terms: aerobic activities are the large-muscle, continuous, rhythmic modes prescribed for cardiorespiratory fitness; anaerobic efforts are the brief, all-out bouts that rely on stored phosphagens and glycolysis. The detailed energy-system mechanics (ATP resynthesis, Krebs cycle, lactate handling, fiber types) are owned by the physiology domain.
