Two main technologies:

  • Chest strap (electrical / ECG-based). A strap with electrodes detects the heart's electrical signal, the same basis as an ECG. It is the most accurate consumer option, responding quickly to changes — important for intervals/HIIT where wrist sensors lag. Downsides: comfort/fit, must be worn against the skin (moisten the contacts).
  • Wrist / optical (PPG). An optical sensor shines light to detect blood-flow pulsation in the wrist.
