Plyometric progression applies progressive-overload cautiously, because impact forces rise fast and connective tissue adapts more slowly than muscle. General progression axes (advance one at a time, only after the current level is mastered with good technique):

  • Intensity: low → moderate → high (jumps in place → standing jumps → multiple jumps/bounds → box jumps → depth jumps). See plyometric-intensity-levels.
  • Limbs: double-leg → single-leg (single-leg roughly doubles per-limb load).
  • Direction/complexity: vertical → horizontal → lateral → multidirectional/reactive.
  • Amplitude: low boxes/short jumps → higher boxes/longer jumps.
  • Volume: gradually raise foot contacts within the level's appropriate range.
  • Load: body weight → added load only for advanced athletes with a strength base.
  • Speed/reactivity: controlled "stick" landings → fast, reactive minimal-contact landings.
