In one line

The total time a session takes — calculated from the number of sets plus the rest between sets; e.g. 10 sets works out to about 23 minutes.

Detail

Once the total number of sets and the rest periods between sets are determined, the length of the workout can be calculated. The number of sets for each exercise interacts with the administrative variable of time needed for the workout.

Worked example — Bodybuilding Quadriceps Routine (advanced training level):

Category Exercise Sets
Structural Exercise 1. Squats 4 sets
Supplementary Exercise 2. 45 degree Leg Press 3 sets
Body Part Exercise 3. Leg Extension 3 sets

Calculation (10 sets total):

  • a. Rest between sets: 1½ minutes taken for each rest period → 10 sets = 15 minutes
  • b. 12 reps per set: ¾ minute taken for each set → 10 sets = 7.5 minutes

Total length of time for 10 sets = 23 minutes (advanced training level).

Length of workout by program (general guidance):

  • Strength fitness: about 30 minutes of regular, proper training is sufficient stimulus for most people (like aerobic conditioning).
  • Combo and Bodybuilding programs: one or two hours of training may be necessary for the desired strength and hypertrophy benefits.
  • Athletic strength training: 45 minutes to 1 hour is the maximum, because the emphasis is not on hypertrophy alone; athletes seldom train to failure, since that causes muscle fatigue that impairs sport-skill practice.

Key facts

  • Workout length = (number of sets x rest per set) + (number of sets x time per set).
  • Worked example: 10 sets at 1½ min rest each = 15 min; 12 reps at ¾ min each set = 7.5 min; total = 23 minutes.
  • Quad routine = 4 (squats) + 3 (leg press) + 3 (leg extension) = 10 sets.
  • Strength fitness: ~30 min sufficient.
  • Combo/Bodybuilding: 1-2 hours.
  • Athletic strength training: max 45 min to 1 hour.

Connections

  • number-of-sets — total sets is a primary input to the calculation.
  • rest-between-sets — rest time is the other input.
  • repetition — time per set comes from reps x tempo.
