In one line

A trainee performs reps then immediately continues with descending resistances (helped by spotters), repeated over several sets, to build local muscle endurance.

Detail

Breakdown training, also called the "multi-poundage" system, requires 1 or 2 spotters to assist. (A handwritten margin annotation notes the system is also known as "drop sets" or "strip sets" — with a further note that it "gets very hard.") The trainee performs a specific number of reps followed by descending resistances. This procedure is repeated for several sets. This is a good system for increasing local muscle endurance. Beware of fatigue due to a decrease in pH (Poole, 1964).

The source links this system conceptually to very short rest between sets of resistance and training to failure, in the context of ATP-PC store depletion.

Key facts

  • Requires 1 or 2 spotters.
  • Reps performed, then resistance is dropped (descended) and reps continue.
  • Also known as "drop sets" or "strip sets" (handwritten annotation).
  • Repeated for several sets.
  • Good for increasing local muscle endurance.
  • Caution: fatigue from decreased pH (acidosis) — a handwritten annotation adds that this system "gets very hard."

Connections

  • heavy-to-light — both use descending loads; breakdown drops load mid-effort with assistance.
  • lactic-acid-system — pH drop (acidosis) drives the cautioned fatigue.
  • muscle-soreness — the limiting factor of the system.
  • rest-between-sets — associated with very short rest / continuous effort.
