Detail

Sets to exhaustion can be implemented into virtually any training system. Bodybuilders especially use sets to exhaustion in their training programs. Advocates of this system believe that more motor units will be recruited; therefore, they receive a training stimulus with sets to exhaustion that is not achieved when sets are not performed to exhaustion (Stowers et al., 1983).

Current research update (2026)

Modern proximity-to-failure research finds true failure is not required to get this stimulus. Refalo et al. (2023) and Robinson et al. (2024) — pooling over 50 hypertrophy and strength studies — found stopping 1-3 reps short of failure ("reps in reserve") produces essentially the same muscle growth as training all the way to failure, with the relationship flattening out past ~2 reps in reserve. For strength specifically, Davies et al. (2016) found training to failure does not improve gains at all, while adding more fatigue and soreness for the same result. The practical implication: most hypertrophy sets can stop at 1-3 reps in reserve, most strength sets at 3-5, reserving true failure (if used at all) for the last set of the last exercise.
