Cadence-paced partial sit-ups (curl-ups) done in time with a metronome until you can't keep pace or hit a cap; the count rates abdominal/core endurance and avoids the hip-flexor-loaded full sit-up.
The curl-up (crunch) test assesses abdominal muscular endurance. The partial curl is preferred over the full sit-up because full sit-ups recruit the hip flexors (iliopsoas) and load the lumbar spine (iliopsoas-lordosis-situp).
ACSM/CSEP protocol: lie supine, knees bent ~90°, feet flat (unanchored), arms at sides. Tape or markers are placed so fingertips slide a set distance (commonly 8–12 cm, depending on protocol). Curl the trunk up to slide the fingertips the set distance (shoulder blades clear the mat), then lower. Move to a metronome cadence of ~25 curl-ups per minute (one every ~2 s; 50 beats/min: up on one beat, down on the next). Continue until the participant breaks cadence, uses poor form, or reaches a cap of 75–100 reps (protocol-dependent). Record the count.
Note: several curl-up/sit-up protocols exist (timed 1-minute sit-up tests, FitnessGram cadence curl-ups); norms are protocol-specific, so keep the method constant.
