Detail

Resting heart rate (RHR) is best measured after waking, before rising, lying or sitting quietly for several minutes, having avoided caffeine, nicotine, and exertion. Count the radial or carotid pulse for 60 s (or 30 s × 2; 15 s × 4 is acceptable but less precise), or read from a chest-strap/optical wearable.

Typical values: ~60–100 bpm is the conventional "normal" adult range; 60–80 bpm is common in average adults. Well-trained endurance athletes are frequently 40–60 bpm, occasionally lower, reflecting increased stroke volume and vagal tone (cardiac-adaptations). Values consistently >100 bpm (tachycardia) or <60 bpm with symptoms warrant medical attention.
