In one line

A passive hang from a bar with straight arms — the first step toward a pull-up, building grip endurance and shoulder/lat tolerance for loaded hanging.

Detail

Grip an overhead bar (pronated, about shoulder width) and hang with the arms fully extended, feet off the floor, body relaxed but not slumped. The dead hang develops grip strength and forearm endurance (forearms), conditions the shoulders and latissimus-dorsi to bear bodyweight, and decompresses the shoulder girdle. It is the foundation of the pull-up-progression.

Build hold time gradually (e.g. toward 30-60 s). Keep the shoulders from shrugging fully passive into the ears for a long time if the shoulders are sensitive — a slight active engagement is gentler. Beginners can keep toes lightly on the floor to scale the load.

Key facts

  • Passive straight-arm hang; builds grip, forearm endurance, shoulder tolerance.
  • First step of the pull-up progression; build toward ~30-60 s holds.
  • Scale by keeping toes lightly on the floor.

Connections

  • pull-up-progression — step 1.
  • scapular-pull-up — the next step (active hang).
  • forearms — grip endurance.
