In one line

A small shrug-down from a dead hang — depressing and retracting the shoulder blades without bending the elbows — that teaches how to initiate every pull-up.

Detail

From a dead-hang with straight arms, pull the shoulder blades down and back (scapular depression and retraction) to raise the body a few inches, keeping the elbows locked straight throughout, then return to the relaxed hang. This isolates the scapular movement (scapular-movement) that begins a proper pull-up, strengthening the lower trapezius and rhomboids and engaging the lats from the bottom.

Learning to "set" the scapula before bending the elbows prevents the common mistake of hanging passively and yanking with the arms. Performed for controlled reps; an essential prerequisite to the negative-pull-up and full pull-up.

Key facts

  • Depress/retract the scapulae to raise the body a few inches with arms kept straight.
  • Trains the scapular initiation of every pull-up; strengthens lower traps and rhomboids.
  • Bridges the dead hang and the negative pull-up.

Connections

  • pull-up-progression — step 2.
  • dead-hang / negative-pull-up — adjacent steps.
  • scapular-movement — the joint action trained.
