In one line

Wall walk → kick-up to wall → freestanding kick-up → freestanding hold — building the shoulder strength, alignment, and balance to hold an inverted vertical line.

Detail

The handstand balances the whole body inverted on the hands, in a straight hollow line. It blends shoulder/wrist strength, a tight hollow body, and fine balance (proprioception). It is trained as a skill — frequent, fresh practice — and underpins the freestanding handstand-push-up-progression.

The progression:

  1. Wrist & shoulder prep + hollow body — wrist warm-up, shoulder flexion mobility, and the hollow-body-hold shape that keeps the handstand straight.
  2. Wall walk — start in a plank with feet at a wall, walk the feet up and hands toward the wall into a belly-to-wall handstand; builds inverted shoulder strength and confidence. → wall-walk
  3. Kick-up to wall (back-to-wall) — kick up to a wall handstand and hold; learn the inverted line and stacking (wrists-shoulders-hips-ankles). → kick-up-to-handstand
  4. Freestanding kick-up & balance — kick up away from the wall and find balance using finger/wrist pressure corrections and small shifts. → freestanding-handstand
  5. Freestanding hold — accumulate stable hold time, then add presses/HSPUs.

Learn to bail safely (cartwheel or pirouette out) before freestanding work. Practice often in short, fresh bouts; balance is a motor skill that rewards frequency over fatigue.

Key facts

  • Order: wrist/shoulder + hollow prep → wall walk → kick-up to wall → freestanding kick-up → freestanding hold.
  • Combines shoulder/wrist strength, a tight hollow line, and balance.
  • Learn to bail (cartwheel/pirouette) before freestanding attempts.
  • Practiced frequently in short fresh bouts; feeds the freestanding HSPU.

Connections

  • wall-walk / kick-up-to-handstand / freestanding-handstand — the steps.
  • hollow-body-hold — the alignment shape.
  • handstand-push-up-progression — the strength skill it enables.
  • proprioception — the balance component.
