In one line

Support holds → vertical flag → tuck → straddle → full human flag — gripping a vertical pole with both hands and holding the body sideways, horizontal to the ground.

Detail

The human flag grips a vertical pole (or bars) with one hand high and one low, then holds the whole body horizontal and sideways, parallel to the ground. It is a lateral whole-body feat driven by the top-arm pulling (latissimus-dorsi), the bottom-arm pressing (deltoids, chest), and a powerfully braced lateral core (external-oblique, quadratus-lumborum) resisting being folded sideways. Trained as a skill — short, fresh holds (rep-vs-skill-training).

Progression (decreasing leverage and building the press/pull):

  1. Support holds & presses — vertical-pole support, side-plank strength (side-plank), and the press/pull on the pole.
  2. Vertical flag (chamber) — body held vertical (feet up) on the pole, learning the top-pull / bottom-press balance.
  3. Tuck flag — hips up to horizontal with the knees tucked (short lever).
  4. Straddle flag — legs straight and spread wide.
  5. Full human flag — legs straight and together, body fully horizontal.

The bottom-arm press shares qualities with the straddle-planche. Grip and shoulder demand are high; build side-plank and pressing strength first.

Key facts

  • Grip a vertical pole (hand high, hand low); hold the body horizontal and sideways.
  • Top arm pulls (lats), bottom arm presses (delts/chest), lateral core braces hard.
  • Progress: supports/presses → vertical flag → tuck → straddle → full flag.
  • Trained as short fresh holds; build side-plank and pressing strength first.

Connections

  • side-plank — lateral-core builder.
  • straddle-planche — shares the bottom-arm pressing demand.
  • latissimus-dorsi / deltoids / external-oblique — key muscles.
  • rep-vs-skill-training — how to program the holds.
