In one line

Because you cannot dial in a percentage of 1RM, bodyweight intensity is autoregulated by Reps In Reserve (RIR) — how many more reps you could have done — kept at 1-3 for rep work and much higher for skill work.

Detail

Weighted training prescribes intensity as a percentage of 1RM (see intensity). With a fixed bodyweight that lever is gone, so calisthenics uses effort-based autoregulation: Reps In Reserve (RIR) — the number of additional reps you estimate you could perform before form breaks — and the related RPE (rate of perceived exertion, where RPE ≈ 10 − RIR).

Practical targets:

  • Hypertrophy / general strength (rep work): train most sets at 1-3 RIR (RPE 7-9). Occasional sets to failure (0 RIR) are useful but costly to recover from and should be limited, especially on skill-adjacent movements.
  • Strength / low-rep work: 2-3 RIR to keep technique crisp and bar-speed (here, rep-speed) high.
  • Skill / static-hold practice: stay well short of failure — effectively high RIR. Stop a hold when form degrades, not when you fail; failing a lever or handstand is unproductive and risky.

A key wrinkle unique to bodyweight: when a movement is too easy you cannot just add load, so you may be forced far below your true rep maximum (e.g. an athlete who can do 40 push-ups gets little strength stimulus from sets of 12). The fix is to advance to a harder leverage variation so the working rep range again sits near failure — see progressive-overload-bodyweight. Conversely, if you cannot complete a clean rep with 2-3 RIR, regress to an easier variation.
