ACSM's prescription template — Frequency, Intensity, Time, Type, plus Volume and Progression — used to build a complete, individualized aerobic exercise plan.

Detail

FITT-VP is ACSM's framework for writing an exercise prescription. The original FITT (Frequency, Intensity, Time, Type) is extended with Volume and Progression:

  • Frequency — how often. For aerobic work ACSM recommends ≥5 days/week of moderate-intensity, ≥3 days/week of vigorous-intensity, or 3–5 days/week of a combination.
  • Intensity — how hard. Set with the intensity classification (moderate = 40–59% HRR/VO2R, 64–76% HRmax, RPE 12–13; vigorous = ≥60% HRR/VO2R, ≥77% HRmax, RPE ≥14; see intensity-classification).
  • Time — how long per session (duration), e.g., enough to accumulate the weekly target.
  • Type — the mode: any continuous, rhythmic activity using large muscle groups (walking, running, cycling, swimming, rowing, etc.).
  • Volume — the total dose, the product of frequency × intensity × time, often expressed in minutes/week or MET-minutes/week (see weekly-aerobic-volume).
  • Progression — how the prescription advances over time, by gradually increasing frequency, intensity, and/or time (see cardio-progression).

FITT-VP is the structural checklist behind the public-health guidelines and the conditioning-domain prescription (see cardiorespiratory-guidelines). It is mode- agnostic — the same template is filled in differently for a beginner walker versus a trained runner — and pairs with a training-intensity-distribution decision (how to split the weekly volume across easy/hard work; see training-intensity-distribution).

Key facts

  • FITT-VP = Frequency, Intensity, Time, Type, Volume, Progression.
  • ACSM frequency: ≥5 d/wk moderate, ≥3 d/wk vigorous, or 3–5 d/wk combined.
  • Intensity set via the moderate/vigorous classification bands.
  • Volume = frequency × intensity × time (min/week or MET-min/week).
  • Type = continuous, rhythmic, large-muscle activity; mode-agnostic template.

Progressing Cardio TrainingClosely related
Advance aerobic training by gradually raising one variable at a time — usually duration/frequency first, intensity later — in small increments, with the biggest early gains in the first 6–8 weeks.
Aerobic Intensity Classification (Light / Moderate / Vigorous)
ACSM's master table for translating "moderate" and "vigorous" into numbers across every common metric — %HRR/VO2R, %HRmax, RPE, and METs.
Training-Intensity Distribution (Polarized / Threshold / Pyramidal)
How a week's training time is split across easy, moderate, and hard zones — the main models being polarized (mostly easy + some very hard), threshold (lots of moderate), and pyramidal (a tapering pyramid from easy to hard).
Weekly Aerobic Volume Targets
The headline dose from WHO and U.S. guidelines — 150–300 minutes of moderate, or 75–150 minutes of vigorous, aerobic activity per week (or an equivalent mix).
Cardiorespiratory Conditioning Guidelines (Peterson & Bryant / ACSM)Closely related
The five-part ACSM prescription for building and keeping cardiorespiratory fitness — frequency 3–5 days/wk, intensity 60–90% of max HR, duration 20–60 min, large-muscle continuous aerobic mode, and gradual progression.
Rate of Progression and the Training EffectClosely related
As the body adapts to imposed stress (the training effect), total work can be raised gradually — by more intensity, more duration, or both — with the most significant conditioning gains in the first 6–8 weeks.
Frequency of Training
How many days per week you train — don't work the same muscle two days in a row, and generally not more than three times a week.
Intensity
The amount of weight (resistance) lifted — also shaped by speed, reps, sets, rest interval, and workout duration.
