Cardio progression applies progressive overload (see progressive-overload) to the FITT-VP variables (see fitt-vp-cardio). The general sequence ACSM and the conditioning guidelines describe is to increase volume before intensity: first build frequency and duration to a comfortable base, then add intensity.

Practical guidance:

  • Change one variable at a time (frequency, then time, then intensity) so adaptation and tolerance can be judged.
  • Small increments. A widely cited rule of thumb is to increase weekly training load (e.g., running mileage) by no more than about 10% per week to limit overuse-injury risk — a practical heuristic rather than a strict law.
  • Three progression stages (ACSM): an initial conditioning stage (lower intensity, shorter sessions), an improvement stage (steeper progression toward goals), and a maintenance stage (holding the achieved level).
  • First 6–8 weeks: the most significant conditioning effects typically appear early (see rate-of-progression).
  • Build in recovery. Periodic easier weeks/deloads prevent the progression from tipping into overreaching (see deload-weeks and under-recovery-signs).
