The total work of an aerobic session is best estimated by its caloric cost; exercise contributes to the energy-balance equation by raising caloric expenditure (basal metabolism + voluntary activity).
For cardiorespiratory training, emphasis should be placed on the total work performed, and total work can be estimated by the caloric expenditure associated with the activity (Peterson & Bryant, 1995). Because lower-intensity activities are conducted over a longer time, comparing sessions by caloric cost (rather than by minutes alone) captures the work actually done.
Caloric balance is the relationship between caloric intake and caloric expenditure — the calories taken in from food and drink compared to those expended by basal metabolism and voluntary activity. The term calorie in nutrition and exercise circles usually means a kilocalorie (kcal) — the heat needed to raise 1 kilogram of water by 1°C; one kcal equals 1,000 cal.
Exercise enters the equation on the expenditure side: increasing energy expenditure through exercise (alone or combined with reduced caloric intake) moves a person toward negative caloric balance. One pound of adipose tissue equals 3,500 kcal, so a 3,500-kcal deficit corresponds to about 1 lb of fat. A deficit of 500 kcal per day leads to losing roughly 1 lb of adipose tissue in 1 week. The daily caloric deficit should not exceed 1,000 to 1,200 kcal per day (about 2 lb body-weight loss per week).
