Do people burn more fat with low-intensity training? It is true that a higher percentage of burned calories comes from fat while exercising at the low end of the intensity range (e.g., jogging at 65% of HRmax) than at moderate or high intensity.

Does this mean low-intensity exercise is best for fat loss? No. Consider the fuel mix by intensity:

  • At 60% to 65% of HRmax (low intensity): 50% of burned calories is fat (CHO contributes the other 50%; protein calories are minimal).
  • At 85% of HRmax (high intensity): 40% of burned calories is fat (60% from CHO).
