Sweating during exercise reduces blood (plasma) volume. As fluid loss grows, the cardiovascular system strains to maintain output: heart rate rises for a given workload, stroke volume falls, and the body's ability to shed heat through skin blood flow and sweating declines, pushing core temperature up.

The widely cited threshold is that dehydration exceeding ~2% of body weight begins to impair performance — especially aerobic/endurance capacity in warm conditions — with effects worsening as losses reach 3–5% and beyond. Documented consequences include reduced endurance and VO2max, higher perceived exertion and heart rate at a given pace, impaired thermoregulation (raising heat-illness risk — see exercise-in-heat), and degraded cognitive function, concentration, and skill (relevant to team and tactical sports). Strength and short, all-out power are comparatively less affected by modest dehydration than prolonged endurance is.
