  • Exercise under ~60 minutes: plain water is the appropriate, inexpensive choice; you have ample glycogen and lose little electrolyte, so the added sugar is unnecessary calories (see fluid-needs).
  • Exercise over ~60–90 minutes, intense, or in heat: a sports drink helps by delivering carbohydrate to spare glycogen (see endurance-fueling) and sodium to aid fluid retention and palatability (see electrolytes), encouraging adequate drinking. The glucose and sodium also speed water absorption in the small intestine.
