Sports drinks typically supply carbohydrate (~6–8% solution, ~14 g per 8 oz) plus electrolytes (mainly sodium and potassium). Their value is situational:
Distinguish product types: sports drinks (carbs + electrolytes, for fueling/hydration during endurance), electrolyte-only mixes (sodium without much sugar, for heavy sweaters managing hyponatremia risk — see exercise-hydration-strategy), and energy drinks (high caffeine and sugar — a stimulant product, not a hydration aid). For everyday hydration and short sessions, sports drinks are just sugar-sweetened beverages that add calories (see added-sugars); reserve them for when their carbohydrate and sodium actually serve performance.
