Lifting weights helps a weight-loss program by building muscle that raises resting metabolic rate, though aerobic exercise burns more calories per minute.
The claim that lifting weights during weight loss is bad — because the muscle built will "turn to fat" when you stop — is fiction. Fat tissue is incapable of becoming muscle tissue. Muscles that are not used simply atrophy (get smaller); they may get replaced by fat only if a person consumes more calories than they expend.
Weight training can be beneficial in a weight-loss program because it helps increase muscle mass, which increases resting metabolic rate — the number of calories you burn at rest. It can also condition muscles and joints, preparing them for other activity. However, if exercise time is limited, aerobic exercise burns more calories per minute, which is why it is generally the exercise of choice in a weight-control program.
The muscle-cannot-turn-into-fat correction and the RMR mechanism both still
hold up. What's dated is the conclusion that follows: resistance training is
now considered essential (not just a nice-to-have) during a caloric deficit,
specifically because it signals the body to preserve lean mass -- so more of
the weight lost is fat rather than muscle. Extended cardio-only approaches
during a deficit can cause disproportionate muscle loss. Current fat-loss
guidance generally prioritizes resistance training (roughly 3-5x/week) with
cardio layered in strategically, rather than treating cardio as the default
