Definition

How often to train each muscle or movement per week — driven by how weekly volume is distributed and how long each muscle needs to recover, not by a magic number.

Detail

Frequency is how often a muscle or movement is trained per week (distinct from total sessions per week). The base variable lives at Frequency of Training and recovery timing at Rest Periods Between Workouts / Principle of Rebuilding Time (Recovery); this module is the programming view.

Key principle: frequency is mostly a tool for distributing weekly volume. Once weekly sets per muscle is set, frequency decides how to split them. Splitting a muscle's weekly volume across 2–3 sessions rather than 1 generally:

  • Keeps per-session volume lower, so quality stays high (less junk fatigue late in a session),
  • Lets you accumulate more weekly volume within your recoverable band, and
  • May better sustain muscle-protein-synthesis stimulation through the week.

Practical guidance:

  • Each muscle ~2×/week is a robust default for hypertrophy and strength; 1×/week works but is usually the floor, and 3×+ suits high volumes or skill-driven lifts.
  • Recovery sets the ceiling: larger muscle groups and heavier/eccentric-heavy sessions need ~48 h before being trained hard again (Principle of Rebuilding Time (Recovery)); small muscles recover faster.
  • More frequency ≠ more results by itself — when weekly volume is equated, higher frequency is roughly comparable, with its advantage coming from enabling more total quality volume.

Frequency, volume, and the chosen split are three views of the same weekly plan: the split is the schedule that delivers the chosen frequency and volume.

Key facts

  • Frequency = times per week a muscle/movement is trained.
  • It is primarily a way to distribute the set weekly volume.
  • ~2×/week per muscle is a robust default; 1× is the floor, 3×+ for high volume/skill.
  • Recovery (~48 h for large/heavy work) sets the upper limit.
  • Volume-equated, frequency differences are roughly comparable for results.
