Adaptation happens during recovery, not during the session (GAS). Scheduling must respect how long the trained tissue/system needs to rebuild before the next hard exposure. The base concept is rebuilding-time and the base variable rest-between-workouts; this is the scheduling view.

Practical recovery windows:

  • A muscle group trained hard typically needs ~48 h before another heavy/high-volume session; large muscles and eccentric-heavy work need the longer end, small muscles less. This is why ~2×/week per muscle is a safe default (see frequency-considerations).
  • The nervous system / heavy maximal work can need longer; very heavy singles and high-intensity power work demand more between-session recovery than moderate hypertrophy work.
  • DOMS peaks ~24–72 h after unfamiliar/eccentric work; you can usually train through mild soreness but not heavy soreness on the same pattern.

Scheduling rules of thumb:

  • Don't train the same muscle/pattern hard on consecutive days; alternate (e.g., upper/lower, or push/pull/legs) so something is always recovering while something else works.
  • Include at least one rest or easy day per week (see rest-days); rest days are part of the program, not a gap in it.
  • When recovery is chronically incomplete (persistent soreness, stalling, poor sleep), the fix is a deload or more rest, not more training.
