Strength is how much force you can produce, speed is how fast you can move, and power is the product of the two — force applied quickly.

These three qualities are related but distinct:

  • Strength is the maximal force a muscle or muscle group can generate, typically with little regard to time (e.g., a 1RM lift). It sits at the high-force, low-velocity end of the force-velocity-curve.
  • Speed is the ability to move the body or a limb quickly — high velocity, usually against low resistance (e.g., maximal sprint velocity). It sits at the high-velocity, low-force end.
  • Power = force × velocity (work ÷ time). It is the rate of doing work and is maximized at an intermediate combination of force and velocity, not at either extreme.

Because power blends force and velocity, it can be raised by improving either component. Strength is foundational: a stronger athlete has a higher force ceiling to apply quickly, so maximal-strength training usually precedes or accompanies dedicated power work ("you cannot fire a cannon from a canoe"). Speed and power are highly task-specific and require movements performed at high velocity with the intent to accelerate.
