Variation in the volume and intensity of training (periodization) is extremely important for optimal gains in strength. Variation of the stimulus seems to be the key ingredient affecting change in muscle tissue and in neural factors. Proper use of cycling concepts allows better development of strength and power. There is an inverse relationship between the volume and intensity of training across phases.

Several means of varying training are useful for optimal gains in strength and size:

  • Slight variations in foot, hand, or other body-part position that do not affect the lifter's safety.
  • Using several different exercises to assure continual increases in strength.
  • Using several different types of muscular contraction (e.g., concentric, eccentric). A combination of concentric and eccentric actions — rather than concentric-only training — produces superior strength gains.

When training variables are not changed, plateaus result. If a user fails to change training variables for a long period, plateaus in strength and power gains will occur (Fleck & Kraemer, 1997). One system of training will not work optimally for all individuals and muscle groups, and the indefinite use of one program leads to plateaus in progress and overtraining; optimal gains come from mixing programs and manipulating short- and long-term variables appropriately. Periodized programs using multiple sets appear superior to using the same multiple-set system for the entire training period (Willoughby, 1993).
