Periodization is the systematic variation of training volume and intensity over time (a handwritten source note describes it as "changing intensity ... and volume over time"). It gives a theoretical basis for deciding how to change the number of reps, sets, and load (intensity) across a training year. It has been especially successful for the enhancement of strength and power performances.

In the theoretical model described by Stone et al. (1981), four basic phases are involved: hypertrophy (high volume, low intensity), basic strength (moderate volume, high intensity), peaking, and active rest. There is an inverse relationship between volume and intensity of training — as one rises, the other falls.

Variation of the training stimulus appears to be the key ingredient affecting change in muscle tissue and neural factors. Proper use of cycling concepts allows better development of strength and power. If a trainee fails to change training variables for a long period, plateaus in strength and power gains result (Fleck & Kraemer, 1997). Periodized programs using multiple sets appear superior to using the same multiple-set system for the entire training period for developing strength and power (Willoughby, 1993).

A resistance program is first developed by making decisions about acute program variables: (1) choice of exercise, (2) order of exercise, (3) RM load, (4) number of sets, and (5) rest periods. After a certain amount of time, changing the acute workout is important to reduce boredom, injury, and overtraining.
