Detail

A repetition maximum (RM) is the maximum weight that can be lifted for a specific number of repetitions to exhaustion (Fleck & Kraemer, 1997). Examples include 1 RM, 6 RM, 8 RM, and 10 RM. A 6-RM load is the resistance for which only six repetitions can be achieved.

The RM concept originated with DeLorme and Watkins (1948) as part of isotonic training research. Their early contributions have been slightly modified in recent years to suggest that isotonic training be performed at five to seven repetitions maximum (RM), with three sets completed per exercise at one session, training approximately three or four sessions per week. The RM concept of DeLorme and Watkins represented the maximum number of repetitions that could be continuously performed at a given resistance; thus 6-RM referred to the resistance for which only six repetitions could be achieved. This system provided a suitable method of incorporating the overload principle, since people could exercise at their individual loads yet still conform to the RM concept.

As a general guide:

  • Low RM, up to 6 — strength
  • Medium RM, 8 to 12 — hypertrophy (muscle mass)
  • High RM, 15 to 30 — endurance

Current research update (2026)

The strength row of this guide still holds: low reps at heavy loads (roughly 80-95% 1RM) produce measurably greater 1RM-specific strength gains than higher-rep training, even when muscle growth ends up similar. But the hypertrophy/endurance rows are now considered an oversimplification. Schoenfeld et al.'s 2021 re-examination of the repetition continuum, and studies since, found hypertrophy is largely rep-range-agnostic across a broad loading spectrum — as low as 2-4 reps to as high as 20-30+ reps produce equivalent muscle growth, provided sets are taken close to failure. The "8-12 RM = the hypertrophy zone" framing is a reasonable default (it's an efficient middle ground of load and fatigue cost), not a physiological requirement.
