When 6 RM or less is used in a set, strength is primarily being developed. When 8 RM to 12 RM is used, hypertrophy is the primary feature being developed.

Strength training sits at the opposite end of the continuum from endurance training. Endurance is developed by performing low-intensity exercise for a relatively long time, whereas strength is developed by performing high-intensity exercise for a relatively short time. To emphasize strength training, the intensity level is high — normally in the range of 4 RM to 6 RM, and at times as low as 2 RM.

Research indicates that most people can complete 8 repetitions with 85% of their maximum resistance and 12 repetitions with 75% of their maximum resistance. In the source author's opinion, 75 to 85% of maximum resistance provides an optimum training intensity for muscle hypertrophy — which is why 8 to 12 repetitions are popular in bodybuilding routines. The exact reps and resistance percentage that fit this requirement are determined by trial and estimation.

Research has also proven that training at 60% of 1 RM for 10 reps is sufficient to elicit an increase in muscle size and strength. Thus, for basic strength fitness, 10 to 15 reps at an intensity of 60% to 70% of 1 RM is an acceptable way to obtain the desired results.

In the past, resistance was determined from the maximum weight that could be used for one repetition; however, this 1-RM method presents a high risk of injury.

Current research update (2026)

The strength end of this continuum holds up: low reps at heavy loads still produce greater 1RM-specific strength gains than higher-rep training. But treating 8-12 reps as the hypertrophy zone, and 15-30+ reps as only good for endurance, is now considered an oversimplification. Schoenfeld et al.'s 2021 re-examination of the repetition continuum (and studies through 2024-2025) found hypertrophy occurs across a much broader loading spectrum — 2-4 reps to 20-30+ reps produce equivalent muscle growth — as long as sets are taken close to failure. The "8-12 reps, 75-85% of max" zone described here is a reasonable, efficient default (good fatigue-to-stimulus ratio), not evidence that hypertrophy requires it.
