Detail

Circuit programs consist of a series of resistance-training exercises that are performed one after the other with minimal rest (15–30 seconds) between exercises. Approximately 10 to 15 repetitions of each exercise are performed per circuit at a resistance of 40 to 60% of one RM — corrected in a handwritten margin annotation to 50–70% of 1 RM (the printed "40 to 60%" is struck through). If desired, several circuits of the exercises can be performed. This type of program is very time-efficient: for the facility, since each piece of equipment is virtually kept in constant use, and for the individual, because of its short rest periods.

Circuit weight training may also produce slight improvement in cardiovascular fitness. Circuit programs of short-term duration (8 weeks to 20 weeks) increase maximal oxygen consumption (VO2 max.) approximately 4% to 8% in men and women (Gettman & Pollock, 1981). This is substantially less than the 15% increase in VO2 max. produced by cardiovascular conditioning programs (running & cycling) over the same period.
