Body-fat percentage is the fraction of body mass that is fat. No field method measures it directly; all estimate it, with method-specific error (see body-composition-overview):

  • Skinfold calipers — pinch thickness at standard sites fed into an equation. Decent reliability with a skilled, consistent tester; error grows with technique variation.
  • Bioelectrical impedance (BIA) — scales/handheld devices that run a tiny current. Convenient but very sensitive to hydration, food, exercise, and time of day, so readings bounce; treat single values cautiously.
  • DEXA — lab-grade and more accurate, but costs money and still has a margin; not a daily tool.
  • Visual / circumference-based estimates — rough, but fine for trend.

For tracking, the rules are:

  1. Pick one method and standardize conditions (same device, same time, same hydration).
  2. Read the trend, not the absolute. A BIA scale may be several percentage points off in absolute terms yet still show a real downward trend if conditions are held constant.
  3. Smooth it like weight (see trend-vs-noise); single readings are noisy.
