Cardio efficiency measures how much external output you get per unit of internal cost. The practical field versions:

  • Pace at a fixed HR — if an easy-zone run is steadily faster week over week at the same average HR, fitness has improved (see cardio-pace, heart-rate-logging).
  • Efficiency Factor (EF) — normalized power (or speed) ÷ average HR for a session; rising EF over a block indicates improving aerobic efficiency.
  • Aerobic decoupling (Pw:HR drift) — within a long steady effort, how much HR drifts upward relative to pace/power. Low decoupling (often a guideline of <5%) signals good aerobic durability; high decoupling signals the effort exceeded your aerobic base or you under-fueled/dehydrated (cardiac drift).
