Why it beats raw pace as a progress metric: pace alone is confounded by terrain, heat, and fatigue (see cardio-pace), and HR alone drifts. Their ratio controls for both — it isolates the adaptation (more stroke volume, capillaries, mitochondria — see cardiac-adaptations) from the conditions.
