HRV is the tiny beat-to-beat timing variation in your heart rate; higher (vs your own baseline) generally signals good recovery, lower signals stress or fatigue.

Heart-rate variability is the variation in time between consecutive heartbeats. Even at a steady ~60 bpm the intervals are not perfectly even, and that variation is driven by the autonomic nervous system — the parasympathetic ("rest and digest") branch increases HRV, the sympathetic ("stress/fight-or-flight") branch decreases it. So HRV is a window onto autonomic balance and recovery state. The most common consumer metric is RMSSD (root mean square of successive differences between beats), reported in milliseconds.

How to use it:

  • Compare to your own rolling baseline, not to other people. Absolute HRV varies hugely with age, genetics, and measurement method, so cross-person comparison is meaningless.
  • A morning HRV well below your baseline suggests sympathetic dominance from training load, poor sleep, illness, alcohol, or life stress (see stress-management) — a cue to go easier (see autoregulation-rpe-rir).
  • HRV typically rises as fitness and recovery improve and suppresses with accumulated fatigue or overreaching.
  • It is noisy: read a 7-day rolling average and watch for deviations outside your normal range, not single-day blips (see trend-vs-noise).

Measurement matters: take it at the same time daily, ideally on waking, in the same posture. Morning measures are more reliable than overnight-averaged ones across devices, and chest straps generally beat wrist optical for HRV fidelity (see hr-monitor-accuracy). HRV is a leading input to composite readiness/recovery scores (see readiness-recovery-scores).

Limits: HRV is informative but not a verdict. Many things move it that aren't training; it should inform decisions alongside RHR, sleep, soreness, and how you feel — never override them outright.
