NEAT is all the energy you burn moving that isn't formal exercise — walking, fidgeting, posture, chores — and it's a large, variable slice of daily burn that quietly drives fat-loss results.
NEAT is the energy expended on everything physical that isn't deliberate exercise, sleeping, or eating: walking around, standing, fidgeting, household chores, occupational movement. It is a component of total daily energy expenditure (see tdee) alongside resting metabolic rate, the thermic effect of food, and the energy cost of structured exercise.
Two facts make NEAT matter for tracking:
You can't measure NEAT directly, but the trackable proxy is steps / daily movement (see steps). The practical play during fat loss is to defend a daily step floor so NEAT doesn't quietly collapse, rather than trusting a device's calorie estimate. The cleanest validation, as always, is the bodyweight trend against intake (see caloric-balance).
