Screens themselves aren't the enemy, but how and when they're used affects sleep, movement, and stress — three pillars of recovery.

Three pathways screens affect fitness:

  1. Displaced movement (sedentary time): screen time is mostly sitting time, contributing to the sedentary-behavior risks (see sedentary-behavior) and lowering daily movement (see neat).
  2. Delayed/worse sleep: evening screens harm sleep two ways —
    • Light: bright/blue light in the evening suppresses melatonin and can delay the circadian clock and sleep onset (see circadian-rhythm). The effect is real though its size is debated; brightness/timing/content all matter.
    • Arousal/content: engaging or stressful content (work email, news, doom-scrolling, gaming) keeps the mind activated, which may matter as much as the light itself.
