Smoking (and to varying degrees vaping/other nicotine) undermines fitness through several
mechanisms:
- Oxygen delivery: carbon monoxide binds hemoglobin (forming carboxyhemoglobin), reducing
the blood's oxygen-carrying capacity — directly cutting aerobic capacity and endurance (see
cardiorespiratory-guidelines).
- Lung function: smoking damages airways and lung tissue, raising COPD risk and reducing
ventilation efficiency over time.
- Cardiovascular harm: nicotine raises heart rate and blood pressure acutely; chronic
smoking accelerates atherosclerosis and raises CVD risk (see hypertension).
- Impaired recovery & healing: smoking impairs blood flow, collagen synthesis, and
wound/bone/soft-tissue healing, slowing recovery from training and injury (see
recovery-overview).
- Other: worse sleep (nicotine is a stimulant, see sleep-hygiene); reduced
exercise capacity and higher perceived exertion.
Vaping/nicotine note: e-cigarettes avoid combustion products but still deliver nicotine
(cardiovascular/sleep effects) and have their own respiratory concerns; "harm reduction"
relative to cigarettes does not mean harmless.
The good news — quitting helps fast:
- Heart rate and blood pressure begin normalizing within hours-to-days; carbon monoxide clears
within a day; circulation and lung function improve over weeks to months, with cardiovascular
risk falling substantially over the following years.
