How to do the Band Overhead Press

Cues reviewed by Kwabena Osei on

Setup

Stand on the middle of a band with feet shoulder-width apart, handles at shoulder height.

  1. Press the handles straight overhead to full extension -- resistance increases toward the top of a band press, the opposite of a free-weight press, so expect the hardest part of the rep to be near lockout.

  2. Lower under control, resisting the band's pull back to the starting position.

Common mistakes

  • Letting the band snap your arms back down on the return instead of controlling the descent.

  • Arching the lower back to help finish the press near the top, where band tension is highest.
