How to do the Behind Neck Press

Cues reviewed by Kwabena Osei on

Setup

Not recommended -- your own notes flag this exercise explicitly: it forces too much external rotation of the shoulder to clear the head from behind, the same underlying risk mechanism as a behind-neck lat pulldown. This is a real safety caution from your source material, not a stylistic preference.

  1. If performed anyway: press the bar from behind your neck to a full overhead lockout, being especially conservative with load and range given the forced external rotation.

Common mistakes

  • Treating this as an equally valid alternative to the standard (front) overhead press -- it isn't; the strict/seated front press trains the same anterior deltoid without the same rotational shoulder risk.

  • Using a heavy load on this variant at all, given the exercise's own explicit not-recommended status.
