How to do the Cable Lateral Raise

Cues reviewed by Kwabena Osei on

Setup

Stand sideways to a low pulley, handle in the hand farthest from the machine, arm at your side with a slight elbow bend.

  1. Raise your arm out to the side until it's roughly parallel to the floor, leading with your elbow.

  2. The cable keeps tension on the deltoid through the whole range, including the bottom -- control the descent instead of letting the weight stack drop you back down.

  3. Keep the load light; the same shoulder-impingement caution from free-weight lateral raises applies here too.

Common mistakes

  • Letting the cable yank your arm back down at the bottom instead of controlling the full range.

  • Turning toward the machine to use body momentum instead of isolating the movement at the shoulder.

How the knowledge graph models this movement

Each joint action, with the role and emphasis the graph assigns each muscle. These are qualitative anatomical labels, not measured muscle activation.

  • Shoulder abductionprimary action

Medial deltoid (prime mover, high emphasis); Supraspinatus (synergist, moderate emphasis); Anterior deltoid (synergist, low emphasis); Posterior deltoid (synergist, low emphasis); Trapezius (synergist, moderate emphasis)

  • Scapula elevationsecondary action

Trapezius (synergist, low emphasis); Serratus anterior (stabilizer, low emphasis)
