How to do the Dumbbell Shoulder Extension

Cues reviewed by Kwabena Osei on

Setup

Hinge forward at your hips (or lie face-down on an incline bench), dumbbell held with a slight bend in your elbow, arm hanging down in front of you.

  1. Raise the dumbbell back and out to the side, moving through shoulder extension and horizontal abduction together -- the real, defining action for the posterior deltoid.

  2. Keep your torso still and stable throughout.

  3. Lower under control back to the start.

Common mistakes

  • Using body momentum/swing to raise the weight instead of an isolated, controlled movement -- the posterior deltoid is often under-trained precisely because these movements are rushed instead of done properly.

  • Using too heavy a weight, given this is meant to be a light isolation exercise for a relatively small, easily-recruited-by-momentum muscle.

How the knowledge graph models this movement

Each joint action, with the role and emphasis the graph assigns each muscle. These are qualitative anatomical labels, not measured muscle activation.

  • Shoulder extensionprimary action

Posterior deltoid (prime mover, high emphasis)

  • Shoulder horizontal abductionsecondary action

Posterior deltoid (prime mover, moderate emphasis); Infraspinatus (synergist, low emphasis); Teres minor (synergist, low emphasis)
