How to do the Cable Overhead Tricep Extension (Rope)

Cues reviewed by Kwabena Osei on

Setup

Facing away from a low pulley, rope in both hands overhead, elbows pointing forward and fixed near your ears.

  1. Extend your elbows to press the rope forward and up, keeping your upper arms fixed -- the overhead position lengthens the long head, the same real benefit as the free-weight overhead versions.

  2. Return under control to a full stretch behind your head.

Common mistakes

  • Letting the elbows drift wide or forward instead of staying fixed near your ears.

  • Leaning the torso forward to help move the weight instead of isolating the extension at the elbow.
