How to do the Horizontal Tricep Extension With Rope

Cues reviewed by Kwabena Osei on

Setup

Stand facing a cable set at roughly chest/shoulder height, gripping the rope with both hands, elbows at carrying-angle width (not pinned unnaturally narrow).

  1. Extend your elbows to push the rope forward and out, splitting your hands apart at the end for extra contraction -- this variation emphasizes the lateral head of the triceps.

  2. Keep your elbows at that natural carrying-angle width throughout -- this is what makes rope work effective for triceps extensions.

  3. Return under control to the starting position.

Common mistakes

  • Pinning the elbows unnaturally close together instead of letting them sit at a natural carrying-angle width.

  • Using your shoulders to help push the rope instead of isolating the extension at the elbow.
