How to do the Front Raise

Cues reviewed by Kwabena Osei on

Setup

Stand tall, weight held in front of your thighs. With dumbbells, choose your grip deliberately: a neutral grip (palms facing each other) isolates the anterior deltoid more; a pronated grip (palms facing down/back) is the classic version but lets more secondary muscle assistance in, so it isolates the deltoid less.

  1. Raise the weight straight up in front of you to roughly shoulder height.

  2. Keep a slight, fixed bend in your elbows throughout -- don't let them straighten or bend further mid-rep.

  3. Lower under control back to your thighs.

Common mistakes

  • Swinging the weight up using body momentum instead of a controlled anterior-deltoid raise.

  • Raising the arm well past shoulder height, which shifts the resistance off the deltoid and adds unnecessary strain at the top.

How the knowledge graph models this movement

Each joint action, with the role and emphasis the graph assigns each muscle. These are qualitative anatomical labels, not measured muscle activation.

  • Shoulder flexionprimary action

Anterior deltoid (prime mover, high emphasis); Pectoralis major (synergist, moderate emphasis); Medial deltoid (synergist, low emphasis); Serratus anterior (synergist, low emphasis)

  • Scapula elevationsecondary action

Trapezius (synergist, low emphasis); Trapezius (synergist, low emphasis); Serratus anterior (stabilizer, low emphasis)
