How to do the Incline Barbell Bench Press
Setup
Same bench setup as flat, bench angled (ideally 25-30 degrees, the angle shown to best target the upper chest), bar lowered to the upper chest rather than mid-chest.
Retracting and pinning the shoulder blades together and down is a deliberate technique that increases the pec's mechanical force angle — it is not automatic. A rep completes with the shoulder blades left protracted (rounded forward) too; that just transfers less force to the chest. Cue it explicitly, do not assume it happens.
Retract your shoulder blades the same way as a flat press before unracking.
Lower to your upper chest/collarbone area -- the incline shifts the bar's landing point up compared to a flat press.
Start the press by contracting your chest first, not by pushing with the shoulders or arms -- which muscle initiates the movement measurably changes how much of the work your chest actually does.
Press up and slightly back along that same path, same lockout as the flat version.
Common mistakes
Using too steep an incline, which turns the movement into more of a shoulder press and reduces the intended upper-chest emphasis.
Flaring the elbows out wide, which increases shoulder strain more on an incline press than on a flat one.
Arching your lower back to shorten the range or move more weight -- it creates dangerous, uneven pressure on the spinal discs and can contribute to a herniated disc. Keep your glutes and upper back on the bench throughout.
