It is essential to initiate pectoral exercises (bench press, incline press, flyes) with a pectoral contraction — not with the anterior deltoid or an arm-driven push. This is a genuine, checkable claim about motor control, not vague coaching advice: which muscle a lifter is told to "start" or "focus on" changes the EMG output of that muscle relative to its synergists during the same lift. The best-known direct test of this idea in the bench press is Snyder & Fry (2012, Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research): eleven trained lifters performed bench presses at 50% and 80% 1RM under two verbal attentional-focus cues — "focus on using your chest" vs. "focus on using your triceps" — while pectoralis major (PM), anterior deltoid (AD), and triceps brachii (TB) EMG were recorded. At 50% 1RM, the chest-focus cue raised PM EMG amplitude relative to the triceps-focus condition, and switching the cue to triceps raised TB activity instead — the same movement, same load, same lifter, different muscle emphasis purely from where attention (and, functionally, initiation) was directed. The effect was more pronounced at the lighter load (50% 1RM) than at 80% 1RM, where the load itself starts to dominate motor recruitment regardless of cue.

The founder's note and the EMG literature point the same direction: telling a lifter to push the weight with "the arms" or let the front delt take over first recruits deltoid and triceps preferentially; explicitly initiating with a chest squeeze biases pectoral recruitment for the same external load.
