How to do the Safety Bar Squat
Setup
The bar's padded yoke sits on the traps with handles held in front -- this shifts the center of mass forward slightly compared to a straight bar.
Brace and unrack; expect a slightly more upright, quad-forward feel than a straight bar back squat because of where the load sits.
Descend with the same hip/knee timing as a back squat, letting the handles guide your arm position rather than gripping them for stability you don't need.
Drive up keeping the torso from folding forward -- the forward-shifted load makes this the main technical risk of this variation.
Common mistakes
Gripping the handles too hard and using arm tension to fight the bar's natural lean, instead of adjusting torso angle.
Using the same bar-path cues as a straight bar without accounting for the real shift in center of mass.
