How to do the Wrist Roller

Cues reviewed by Kwabena Osei on

Setup

Stand holding a wrist-roller handle horizontally at arm's length in front of you, elbows straight and pinned at your sides, a weight hanging from the rope wound around the handle's center.

  1. Wind the rope up by alternating your wrists -- one wrist curls forward (flexion) while the other rotates back (extension), then reverse the pattern, walking the weight up.

  2. Keep your elbows locked in place at your sides the entire time -- this is a wrist-only movement, not a curl.

  3. Once the weight reaches the top, reverse the winding direction to lower it back down under control rather than letting it drop.

Common mistakes

  • Bending or swinging the elbows to help wind the rope, which turns this into an arm exercise instead of isolating the wrists and forearms.

  • Letting the weight drop and unwind freely on the way down instead of controlling the descent -- the lowering phase is real training stimulus too.
