Detail

Calisthenics (from the Greek kallos, "beauty," and sthenos, "strength") is resistance training in which the load is the trainee's own body mass moved against gravity. The same physiological principles that govern barbell training apply — progressive-overload, specificity, and progression — but the resistance cannot simply be increased by adding plates. Instead it is scaled by changing the body's mechanical disadvantage (leverage), the range of motion, the speed of movement, the number of limbs supporting the load, and total work performed.

Two broad goals coexist in calisthenics:

  • Strength and hypertrophy through rep-based work on fundamental pushing, pulling, squatting, hinging, and bracing patterns (push-ups, pull-ups, dips, squats, rows).
  • Skill (gymnastic-strength) development — static holds and high-leverage feats such as the planche, front lever, human flag, handstand, and muscle-up, which require both maximal strength and motor learning.

Because the equipment requirement is low (often just a bar to hang from and the floor), calisthenics is highly portable and a natural fit for home, travel, and minimal-equipment training.
