A simple, equipment-free intensity gauge: if you can talk comfortably you're easy/moderate; if speech becomes broken you've reached the ventilatory threshold; if you can't talk you're vigorous.
The talk test estimates exercise intensity from how comfortably you can speak while moving. It is valued for being free, intuitive, and surprisingly well-validated: since the late 1990s it has been treated as a practical marker of the ventilatory threshold (see ventilatory-thresholds).
Three speech stages:
This maps cleanly onto the public-health rule of thumb used by the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans: during moderate activity a person can talk but not sing, whereas during vigorous activity they cannot say more than a few words without pausing for breath. The talk test pairs well with RPE (see rpe-borg-scales) and is a practical way to keep easy/zone-2 work genuinely easy (see zone-2-training).
